IUI Treatment : A Step Closer towards Parenthood!

IUI treatment

IUI treatment is an infertility treatment which is safe and less expensive compared to other treatments. Intrauterine insemination is a procedure which involves washing sperm and then finally placing them in the uterus. Your gynaecologist will tell you about a few tests that will help in opting the right treatment. This is important to check as many patients come with a lot more unknown complications which will affect the IUI treatment in general. You can book an online consultation via video call for better insight. Sperm wash is often misunderstood as patients think that sperms are washed. In fact this is simply removing the prostaglandin from the semen. Prostaglandin can cause many unwanted problems in females.

What is IUI Treatment?

IUI is the most prevalent and common treatment for infertility. IUI treatment means that a sperm is directly put into the uterus. Why would this help? When a couple have sex the sperm is released into the vagina. Most of the sperm are going to be killed in vagina. Some will reach the opening of the uterus known as the cervix . A cervix is the long tunnel lined with the sticky mucus. The sperms that don’t die in the vagina, most of which will get stuck in the cervix and never make it out. Together, the vagina and cervix present a considerable barrier to the passage of sperm. This is the problem since the eggs get fertilised in the Fallopian tube. If the sperm are not making it into the Fallopian tube, then pregnancy can’t happen. So does an UTI treatment work? IUI treatment stands for intrauterine insemination. During an IUI, the sperm are placed directly into the uterus. This bypasses the vagina and the cervix. As a result, a lot more sperm can swim into the Fallopian tubes where fertilisation happens. Many studies have shown that compared to intercourse alone, the chance for pregnancy with IUI is better. In order to become pregnant with IUI there are three absolute requirements. One is male must have sperm. Female must ovulate either on her or with fertility medications. The female must have at least one Fallopian tube that is open. What test should you have before an IUI treatment? All women should have HSG to make sure that at least one Fallopian tube is open. All men should have a semen analysis to make sure that they have sperm and to see how many sperm there are, how many are moving and how many look under the normal microscope. In order to be most effective the IUI treatment must be done at the time of ovulation. IUI treatment timing needs to be more precise than intercourse. Figuring out the time of ovulation can be done at the home with an ovulation predictor test of some type. These tests are generally pretty accurate.

What are the myths around IUI treatment?

Go to your gynaecologist for an accurate test of ovulation. Do not try to determine your ovulation time by using an app or temperature. Another tip, if you are a woman with one Fallopian tube or blocked Fallopian tube monitor with the ultrasound. This will help you see when the eggs are getting mature as the same side with open Fallopian tubes. Your gynaecologist specialist might talk about sperm wash, before the sperm is actually placed in the woman’s uterus it’s been prepared by your doctor. When the man ejaculates his fluid contains seminal fluid and sperm, these are basically two important parts. Seminal fluid contains many chemicals, one group that can create a problem is prostaglandin. If high levels of prostaglandin are directly placed during the IUI treatment the woman can become sick. The symptoms include nausea, vomiting etc. The symptoms appear after a few minutes of IUI, to avoid this problem  the gynaecologist clears the fluid part and separates the sperm. This sperm is injected directly into the uterus. This technique is called sperm wash. This can be a bad term because the sperms are actually not washed just separated from the fluid. There are several methods that tell about sperm wash and no method is better than others. This is purely the choice of your gynaecologist specialist to choose the right one or the one that is suitable for you. There is one question that is asked by the patients and that is sperm count. IUI treatment works well with males who have normal sperm count or counts that are mildly low. Visit your nearby gynaecologist clinic to get the best advice.  The male patients who have very low sperm counts have a low chance of pregnancy with IUI. Mostly these types of patients are advised to get IVF. Recently a research was held and found that double IUI treatment will not make any difference in case of men with low sperm count. This was continued upto four months. At the end of the study, there was no difference in the number of couples who became pregnant. Multiple IUI treatments each month cannot help couples. So the common myth that 2 IUI are better than one is busted by this report or study. Will the rest help after the IUI treatment? There were 400 people that were reported after the IUI treatment. They were divided into two groups of 200 each. Now one group of females were allowed to rest right after the IUI treatment for 15 mins. The other group were moving after IUI treatment. The results were really surprising! Women who rested for 15 mins had more pregnancies. This was compared to women who didn’t take rest after the treatment was found less effective. So, a minimum 15 rest is a must!

Men having abnormal appearing sperm. Every man has abnormal sperm shape but in normal condition the number is less. When a man has a high number of abnormal sperms, this condition is known as teratospermia. This decreases the chances of pregnancy. Your gynaecologist will perform a maximum  of four IUI. The results are not satisfactory in case of these male patients. Can medications improve the success rate of IUI treatment? The answer is complicated because it is found that some women find it beneficial and other women don’t. The women who generally benefit have unknown fertility problems. The group of who don’t benefit are those who have donor sperm or don’t have a partner. IUI treatment is relatively easy and non-invasive. It is not that expensive as well and it takes less time to get pregnant compared to just having sex. Maximise the chances of you getting pregnant by opting the IUI treatment.
