Diabetes, even though diagnosed with it or not but the name is familiar to all. Diabetes is a condition where the insulin hormone is not used effectively or not produced enough. In Ayurveda diabetes is known as Madhumeha. As per ayurvedic science, the human body has three types of doshas. They are vata, pitta and kapha. If there is any imbalance in these doshas, then the health issues arise. Diabetes is the result of kapha dosha imbalance. 

 

In Ayurveda there is diabetes related condition called prameha. There are twenty types of prameha. Out of which, 4 are due to vata,6 are due to pitta and 10 due to kapha. Diabetes (madhumeha) is due to kapha dosha. When kapha is aggravated and causes blockage of paths, diabetes can be caused. This type of diabetes is called as avarana in Ayurveda. If the tissues of the body deplete it might is called as Dhatukshaya which is juvenile diabetes. Due to the imbalance in these doshas, the digestive system  not work well. This leads to building up of toxins in the body and finally reduce immunity. 

 

Symptoms of diabetes 

 

Whether it is type1 or type2 diabetes the symptoms are mostly the same. They are as given.

  • Extreme thirst
  • Frequent and unusual urination 
  • Excessive hunger
  • Unexplained or sudden weight loss 
  • Fatigue 
  • Delay in wound healing 
  • Blur in the vision

Insulin, the hormone secreted by pancreas, regulates blood sugar. If the sugar level is high then pancreas need to produce more insulin. If they fail to secrete so then the sugar levels increase.   3. Diet is to be controlled. After all, it is the main reason for metabolic changes. Changes are to be made as per the suggestions of ayurvedic general physician. Diet control is known as Pathya in Ayurveda. To take simplified foods is necessary. Fresh vegetables, herbs and other wheat or malt based foods are advised as per the body nature of the patient. Foods that aggravate kapha dosha are to be reduced. Low fat milk and little amount of ghee can be taken. Fiber rich diets like pomegranates, apples, beans can help in easing metabolism. While having food, it is good to take it warm. Deep fried foods, aerated drinks or soft drinks are to be avoided. Sweets, sugarcane products and cakes are to be avoided. Ayurvedic herbs to regulate diabetes 

 

  • TURMERIC

It is a strong anti-allergic, antibacterial, anti-inflammatory and anti diabetic herb. It mainly helps to regulate insulin levels. It purifies the blood and clears the path. That can control the glucose levels too. 

  • AMLA

The Indian gooseberry is a rich source of vitaminC. This has antioxidant and anti-aging properties. Amla has chromium, phosphorus and calcium. These minerals can regulate blood sugar levels. 

  • SAPTRANGI

In herbal remedies this is one of the most effective herbs. Saptrangi is a tree, its bark can help in maintaining the glucose levels of the body. This can control sugar levels and is a boon for diabetes treatment.

  • TRIPHALA CHURNA

This is an age-old medicine in Ayurveda. Haritaki, amla, and bibhitaki are the three main components. These are made into powder. These three are rich in antioxidants by which the blood sugar levels of the body. 

  • ALOE VERA and BILVA

Aloe Vera slices when taken raw or with buttermilk can give a betterment to diabetes patients. The fruit of bilva can be eaten as it is. If not it can be made as a smoothie. This has a lot of fiber content. This can regulate bowel movement. 

  • GURMAR

This is a twine. It has exceptional anti diabetic properties. It has gymnemic acid molecules which have high anti diabetic properties. These molecules can form complexes with glucose molecules and stop them from entering into the main blood stream. 

  • NEEM and FENUGREEK

Fenugreek can cholesterol and blood sugar levels effectively. This herb can decrease kapha dosha. Fenugreek powder can be taken on a daily basis. Or the fenugreek seeds can be soaked in water overnight and the water along with seeds is taken in the morning. There is no need to say anything especially about neem. It is well known for its healing properties. The main advantage is neem can boost your immune system and will reduce the vulnerability to any other diseases.

  • DRUMSTICK and BITTER GOURD

Bitter gourd if consumed in the morning with an empty stomach can work greatly. It can reduce other complications of diabetes. Drumstick leaves and sticks both have great properties. Tender leaves of drumstick are cooked. Or they are made into powder and taken in meals. This can subside the complications of diabetes. 

  • TULSI and VIZAYSAAR

Vizaysaar is a tree whose bark has anti diabetic properties. A wooden glass made up of the bark of this tree is taken. Water is kept in it overnight and that water is drunk in the morning. The anti diabetic properties will mingle with water and can regulate sugar levels. Tulsi is renewed for its exceptional medicinal properties. If taken regularly it can give a significant change in diabetic patients. It can also relieve additional complications like breathing problems and throat infections.

Alterations to daily life.

Few things are to be avoided strictly by people with diabetes. The foremost is sweets. Be away from tobacco and alcohol. Do not take in too many carbohydrates. Do not skip meals.
